A targeted financial literacy campaign is reaching women's cooperatives, market associations and rural savings groups to deepen understanding of deposit insurance and formal banking.
The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has launched a targeted financial literacy campaign specifically designed to reach women in underserved communities, including rural savings groups, market women associations, and cooperative societies. The campaign, titled “Your Deposit, Your Right”, is being implemented across all six geopolitical zones over a six-month period.
The initiative grew out of research findings showing that women-headed households are disproportionately represented among depositors who fail to claim insured deposits following a bank failure — often due to a lack of awareness of the insurance scheme or difficulty navigating formal claim processes.
Campaign Approach

The campaign combines town hall sensitisation sessions with radio jingles in 11 local languages, distribution of illustrated brochures, and peer-to-peer outreach facilitated by trained community ambassadors drawn from existing women’s groups.
Early Results

Preliminary data from the first eight weeks of the campaign indicate a 34% increase in NDIC awareness among surveyed female participants who had previously reported no knowledge of deposit insurance.
