The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is an independent agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria established to protect depositors and strengthen confidence in the nation's financial system.
The Corporation plays a critical role in ensuring the stability of the banking sector by providing deposit insurance, supervising financial institutions, and managing bank failures effectively.
Through its operations, NDIC safeguards depositors' funds and contributes to a resilient and trustworthy financial ecosystem.
From its establishment in 1988 to today — the milestones that shaped deposit insurance in Nigeria.
NDIC was established through Decree No. 22 of June 15, 1988, as part of wider reforms to strengthen financial stability and depositor protection.
NDIC began operations during a period of rapid banking-sector expansion and distress, helping restore confidence through supervision and intervention.
The Corporation supported failing institutions, protected depositors, recovered assets, and helped prevent wider disruption to the banking system.
Deposit insurance was introduced to protect depositors, manage bank failures effectively, and support confidence in a liberalised banking environment.
NDIC continues to strengthen public confidence, improve regulatory oversight, and provide structured responses to bank failures.
To be effective in the discharge of its mandate, the Corporation is guided by the following core values and beliefs.
We work together to achieve common goals.
We treat others like we would like to be treated.
We are committed to doing what is right and just at all times.
We strive for excellence in all aspects of our work.
We put passion into everything we do; it helps us to achieve more.
NDIC guarantees payment of deposits up to the maximum limit in accordance with its statute in the event of failure of an insured financial institution.
The Corporation supervises banks to protect depositors, foster monetary stability, and promote safe and sound banking practices.
NDIC ensures failing and failed institutions are resolved in a timely and efficient manner.
Liquidation enables orderly closure of failed institutions, asset realisation, and settlement of claims to depositors, creditors and shareholders where possible.
Insuring all deposit liabilities of licensed banks and other insured financial institutions operating in Nigeria.
Giving assistance to insured institutions in the interest of depositors in case of imminent or actual financial difficulties.
Guaranteeing payments to depositors in case of imminent or actual suspension of payments by insured institutions.
Assisting monetary authorities in the formulation and implementation of policies for sound banking practice and fair competition.
Pursuing other measures necessary to achieve the functions of the Corporation.
